Frequently Asked Questions

What are hygienic filter housings?

Hygienic filter housings are specially designed enclosures that hold filter elements used in industries requiring high levels of cleanliness, such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology. They ensure that the filtration process meets strict sanitary standards by minimising contamination risks.

What materials are commonly used in the construction of hygienic filter housings?

These housings are typically constructed from stainless steel grades like 304 and 316, known for their corrosion resistance, durability, and ease of cleaning, making them ideal for sanitary applications.

How do hygienic filter housings differ from industrial filter housings?

Hygienic filter housings are designed with features that facilitate thorough cleaning and sterilisation, such as smooth, polished surfaces and crevice-free designs to prevent bacterial growth. They also accept single open ended (SOE) cartridges, suitable for micron ratings below 1 micron, and are the standard for sterile and final filter applications.

Industrial filter housings do not incorporate these sanitary design elements and commonly only accept double open ended (DOE) filter cartridges, which are typically use for applications above 1 micron.

What industries commonly use hygienic filter housings?

Industries such as food packaging, beverage bottling, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and cosmetics commonly use hygienic filter housings to ensure product sterility and comply with stringent hygiene regulations.

How do I select the appropriate hygienic filter housing for my application?

Consider factors such as the type of fluid being filtered, required flow rate, operating pressure and temperature, compatibility with cleaning and sterilisation processes, and compliance with industry standards will determine the size of housing required.

Consulting then with a filtration specialist ensures the right selection of housing.

Are hygienic filter housings compatible with various filter cartridges?

Yes, they are designed to accommodate different types of filter cartridges, including depth filters, pleated filters, and membrane filters as long as these filters use SOE endcaps. This allowing flexibility based on specific filtration requirements.

What maintenance is required for hygienic filter housings?

Regular maintenance includes inspecting seals and gaskets for wear, ensuring all connections are secure, and routinely cleaning and sterilising the housing to prevent contamination and maintain optimal performance.

Can hygienic filter housings withstand high-temperature sterilisation processes?

Most hygienic filter housings are designed to withstand high-temperature sterilisation methods, such as steam-in-place (SIP), but it's essential to verify the housing's specifications to ensure compatibility with your sterilisation processes.

How often should seals and gaskets be replaced in hygienic filter housings?

Seals and gaskets should be inspected regularly and replaced as needed, typically during routine maintenance or when signs of wear, deformation, or damage are observed, to maintain a proper seal and prevent leaks. A service period of 1 year is common.

Are there specific certifications or standards for hygienic filter housings?

Yes, hygienic filter housings often comply with standards such as 3-A Sanitary Standards or BPME. They also need to comply with FDA regulations, and cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) guidelines, ensuring they meet the necessary sanitary and safety requirements for use in hygienic applications.
